SPINAL CERVICAL & LUMBAR SURGERIES
CERVICAL FUSION AND LUMBAR SPINAL FUSION
Patients with cervical or lumbar spine issues display different symptoms and imaging results that help us understand their condition.
Persistent pain is the chief symptom of spine problems. The doctor determines if unique degenerative changes align with the symptoms, crucial for considering surgical intervention. However, surgery won’t always resolve symptoms if they don’t match the images.
Sometimes, the only solution for certain degenerative changes is fusion surgery.
Our skilled staff collaborates with patients throughout the recovery, ensuring comfort and promoting long-term health. If you need lumbar or cervical spine surgery, consider the expert services of Mario Alejandro Salmon Franz, MD FACS.
CERVICAL STENOSIS
Cervical stenosis originates from a variety of factors that individually or collectively contribute to the condition. These include vertebral deformity, a potent instigator of spine issues, or abnormal growth of bone at the edges of a vertebra, colloquially referred to as osteophytes or bone spurs. Further contributors can be the abnormal enlargement of articular facets, the overgrowth of ligamentum flavum, or the calcification of the posterior longitudinal ligament.
Given this wide spectrum of variants and conditions, a spine surgeon encounters a challenging landscape that necessitates comprehensive evaluation. The complexity of each patient’s situation underscores the importance of thorough and individualized assessment. This thorough evaluation is absolutely crucial in determining the best treatment path for the patient, ensuring both their short-term recovery and long-term spinal health.
CERVICAL STENOSIS SYMPTOMS
• Varying degrees of neck pain
• Tingling or burning sensations in the arms and/or legs
• Pain and/or weakness in the arms, legs and shoulders
• Problems with bladder and bowel control
LUMBAR FUSION
Lumbar fusion surgery unites two or more vertebrae to eliminate abnormal motion, relieve spinal cord pressure, and potentially prevent kyphosis. Sometimes, bone sections must be removed to decompress neural tissue, which can make the spine unstable requiring fusion to maintain stability.
In spinal surgery, the primary goal is decompressing nervous tissue to alleviate discomfort and prevent nerve damage. Simultaneously, we aim to reestablish spinal alignment and stability. These key objectives ensure both immediate and long-term satisfactory patient outcomes.
CERVICAL FUSION
A cervical fusion unites two or more spinal vertebrae. This surgery targets the cervical spine’s top seven vertebrae and eight pairs of cervical nerves. It’s often required after substantial trauma that damages the ligaments, processes, or the vertebrae themselves. If a prosthesis isn’t suitable due to instability, fusion becomes necessary.
Several surgical approaches are available, most commonly from the front of the neck. This involves removing the intervertebral disc, inserting a cage or bone into the disc space, and then adding a plate. Depending on specific injuries, the surgeon decides whether to access the spine from the front, back, or sometimes both ways.
There are various available implants. However, the priority is always to select the best one for each individual patient’s circumstance, assuring an effective, customized treatment.
Mario Alejandro Salmon Franz, MD FACS is committed to providing superior quality care to each and every patient. If you are in need of treatment for cervical or lumbar stenosis or other spinal problems, call us.
